Think that avoiding alcohol for a period of time is a way to prove to others, and to yourself, that you’re not an alcoholic? That doing so would flip a reset switch and let you come back to drinking as a normal person would? We’ve all done it. In entering recovery, you are going to have to address and become comfortable with this fact - once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic
The excuses that I used for why I drank are embarrassing. But I’m not alone in my ridiculous reasoning and excuse making throughout my experiencing in fighting alcoholism on my own. It is part of the illness that plagues us all.

If you can do this honestly, this is a powerful tool in the toolset of a recovering alcoholic. You know how the story is going to end up, if you are capable of being honest with yourself. I have a close friend who uses this method with great success. It cuts out all the B.S. and excuses from his thinking patterns and lets him touch base with the outcome that he desires to avoid.
